Robert Dalton Davis, 84, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 1, 2002, at Baptist DeKalb Hospital in Smithville.
Davis was born Nov. 19, 1917, in Sparta, to Riley Dalton and Effie Ann Terry Davis.
He had been employed by McDonnell-Douglas.
Davis was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Daniels Davis and his parents.
Survivors include two sisters, Nancy D. Davis of Savannah, Ga. and Betty D. Bunch of Birmingham, Ala.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Feb. 4, 2002, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Highland Cemetery. Don Burns will officiate.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Lillie Mae Simmons

Lillie Mae Simmons, 93, passed away Feb. 2, 2002, at St. Thomas Hospital.
Simmons was born Sept. 17, 1908, in Putnam County, to George Henry and Mona Belle Smith Henry.
She attended Spencer Church of Christ. Simmons was a retired furniture dealer and a member of VFW Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Simmons Sr.; one son, Joe Simmons Jr.; three sisters; and two brothers.

Willie Jean Dorris, 68, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 2, 2002, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Dorris was born June 1, 1933, in Logan, W.V., to Columbus Adair and Dora Ashbury Adair.
She was a homemaker.
Dorris was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Dorris of Sparta; seven children, Odetta Clary, Frances Dorris, Wende Seabolt, Tammi Stafford and Thomas Dorris II all of Sparta, Anita Kennedy of West Virginia and Wallace Dial of Indiana; two brothers, John Adair of Ohio and Bobby Adair of West

Newborn hearing tests subject of health council meeting

A standing-room-only crowd gathered in the meeting room at White County Community Hospital on Tuesday for the monthly meeting of White County Health Council.
Representatives of the healthcare community attended the luncheon meeting. White County Health Council Chairman Wallace Austin introduced Dr. Chad Griffin as the guest speaker. Griffin showed a video on the necessity of checking hearing in newborns. After the informative and compelling video, Griffin elaborated on the impact of the testing of newborns for hearing deficiencies. Griffin said, “Hearing loss in newborns causes the child to be developmentally slow if the problem is not discovered before six months of age.”

Gambling and weapon charges result of traffic stop

Several deputies from the White County Sheriff’s Department seized a stolen weapon and a large amount of cash after they responded to a call in reference to a drunk driver. The driver, William D. Robinson, 55, was placed under arrest for DUI and received additional charges for the stolen weapon and gambling promotion.
Deputy Lewis Carrick of the White County Sheriff’s Department responded to a possible drunk driver call from the Cookeville Police Department. At approximately 9:40 p.m., Sunday, the vehicle was traveling south on Highway 111 and then headed toward Roberts Matthew Highway. Relay for Life needs team members

Lorie Wright, Chairman of the 2002 Relay For Life, has announced the date for the team kick-off fund raising activities as February 7.
The kick-off event is free to the public, and scheduled to be held at the Sparta Civic Center on February 7 beginning at 5:00 p.m.
“I’m hoping to actually double our teams from last year,” said Wright.
“That’s the reason we’re doing the kick-off.”
As stated in the official materials for the kick-off, 555,500 people died of cancer in the year 2001, and cancer is the second most common cause of death in Americans.

Myrtle Marie Lance Bray, 75,
passed away on January 24, 2002.
Bray was born on October 10, 1926, in Pennsylvania, and worked at Mallory Controls.
Her parents were James Lance and Victoria Price Lance.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Spivey was born on February 25, 1928, in Jackson County.
He was a retired bricklayer and a World War II veteran.

Nell Roberts Ray, 86,
passed away on January 30, 2002, at Master’s Healthcare Center.
Ray was born on March 27, 1915 in Putnam County.
Ray worked in sales at L & E Apparel.
Her parents were Andrew Jackson Roberts and Martilia Bray, and she was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Erbie Ray.
Survivors include three daughters and a son; Rosemary Lowe and her husband Doyle of Sparta; Patricia and Bill Brady of Sparta; Deborah and James Green of Cookeville; Glenn Ray and Dianna of Sparta; sisters Jean Cunningham of Georgia and Willie B. Thomas of Cookeville.
