Marie Allison Davis, 80, of Sparta, passed away July 17, 2002, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Davis was born Dec. 7, 1921, in White City, Kansas, to William Herbert and Mary Ann Ferguson Allison.
She was a beautician.
Davis was preceded in death by her husband, Harold T. Davis and four brothers, Johnny Allison, Hollis Allison, Bill Allison and Wallis Allison.

Thomas F. Rogers, 84, of Spencer, passed away July 19, 2002, at Erlanger Hospital.
Rogers was born May 1, 1918, in Van Buren County, to W.B. Rogers and Georgie Kell Rogers.
He attended First Baptist Church and was a retired Van Buren County educator.
Rogers was preceded in death by two sons, Tommy Rogers and John Benton Rogers; one grandson, John Thomas Rogers; and one brother, Karl Rogers.

Hershell Thomas Peterson, 69, of White County, passed away July 16, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Patterson was born June 6, 1933, in Lafayette, to Willie Franklin Patterson and Lou Addie Law Peterson.
He attended a non-denominational church.
Patterson was retired from the maintenance department at the University of Illinois.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Billy Gene Patterson.

Subjects arrested after marijuana found

Several subjects were taken into custody for possession of schedule VI drugs after a deputy was given permission to search the occupants of a vehicle on Bunker Hill Road.
At approximately 8:45 p.m., Saturday, Deputy Connor Wardlaw of the White County Sheriff’s Department was on a traffic stop and observed a vehicle pull into a driveway and stop. Wardlaw flashed his light at the vehicle and identified the passenger as Clarence Grantham, 42, of Sparta. Grantham allegedly had an active violation of probation on him.

With only 10 days left until the general election, several local candidates have allegedly been the victims of propaganda being distributed and delivered by various individuals believed to be members of their opponents’ political camps.
According to officials at the White County Sheriff’s Department, numerous complaints have been received about flyers circulating throughout the county, which contain defamatory statements about several candidates. Election Commission officials reported having to strictly enforce the 100 feet boundary regulations during early voting at the office. Police veteran and wife seriously injured

A local law enforcement who has spent over 25 years serving the citizens of Sparta was seriously injured, along with his wife, in an accident in Pickett County on Saturday.
According to Trooper Darrell Winningham, Robert Hall, 54, a lieutenant with Sparta Police Department, and his wife, Sara, 54, were transported by Life Flight to U.T. Medical Center in Knoxville, after their 2002 Honda Goldwing motorcycle was hit head-on by a 1988 Oldsmobile driven by 19-year-old Laura Ralston of Illinois. Wilson was born October 20, 1924, in Yancy County, N.C., to Robert Oscar and Flora Haylman Shepherd.
She was a member of Washington Avenue Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Wilson was preceded in death by her husband, James Ernest Wilson and a son, Ronald Lee Wilson.

Gladys Wright, 93, of Sparta, passed away July 16, 2002, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Wright was born August 1, 1908, in Smith County, to Sam and Lucy
Tennessee Smartt Fitzpatrick.
She had been a homemaker and attended the Church of Christ.
Wright was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Estil Wright.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lena and Clay Farris of Cookeville and Louise and Troy Henry of Sparta; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great grandchildren.

Martha Elizabeth Hood Kotsay, 93, of Ft. Myers, Fla., formerly of Sparta, passed away July 11, 2002.
Kotsay was born March 20, 1909, in White County, to Andy and Myrtle Hood .
She had been a chef.
Kotsay was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Billy J. and Betty Robbins of Ft. Myers, Fla.; two sisters, Lee Baker of Sparta and Mary Robinson of Cookeville; two brothers, Kenneth Hood and Bobby Hood, both of Sparta; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held July 17, 2002, in Clouse Cemetery. Rev. John Bloyd officiated.

She was born on February 16, 1913, in Coffee County, to Wiley B. and Mary Alice Eaton McGuire.
Eichelberger was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church and had been a homemaker.
