James Robert Haston, 77, of Spencer, passed away July 9. 2002, at his residence.
Haston was born August 5, 1924, in Spencer, to John Jefferson and Martha Evalee Gamble.
He was a retired TWRA Officer and farmer.
Haston was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Angela Felice Haston; and two sisters, Margaret Austin and Audrey P. Haston.

Hubert F. Prater

Hubert F. Prater, 75, of Sparta, passed away July 13, 2002.
Prater as born April 19, 1927, in White County, to Frank and Mattie Rogers Prater.
He attended East Sparta Church of God and was served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Prater was preceded in death by his wife, Vennie Jane Sparks Prater; one brother, Kenneth Prater; two sisters, Bonnie Steel and Lorraine Manus; and one grandson, Jacob Myatt.

Civil War general from White County to be honored

The period of history that brought forth great controversy in the South left many men dead, many children fatherless and fueled feelings of anger and hate among recent generations. However, there is one group of men who want to change society’s image of the Civil War and they will be honoring a White County Confederate general beginning at 12 noon, July 20, 2002, at the Sparta Amphitheater.

Culley apprehended in burglary

Authorities captured Jeffrey Lynn Culley, 41, after he fled the scene of an attempted burglary at Dr. Cooke’s Office on North Spring Street.
According to Detective Harold Blankenship of the Sparta Police Department, at approximately 6 a.m., Sunday, Sgt. Travis Barker was responding to an alarm in the area of North Spring Street when he heard a noise coming from behind Dr. Cooke’s office at 486 North Spring Street. Barker went to the area and discovered Culley allegedly attempting to pry open the back door of the veterinary clinic with a crow bar.

Truck rips apart as it slams into house

A quiet Friday morning quickly turned into disaster when a 21-year-old Monterey man lost control of his pick-up truck and slammed head-on into a residence near the O’Connor Utility District Office.
According to Lt. Chad Dodson, of the White County Sheriff Department, at approximately 9:49 a.m. Friday, Derrick Kane Foister, of Monterey, lost control of the 1992 Chevrolet pick-up he was driving and ran into the front wall of a house at 4270 Roberts-Matthews Highway.

Gregory Perry Smith, 43, of Spencer, passed away July 8, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
He was born July 2, 1959, in Warren County, to Perry and Faye Ilene Mitchell Smith.
Smith had been a paramedic and attended the Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include one sister, Eleanor Mooneyham of Spencer;and two half-sisters, Melba Mooneyham and Marilyn Baker, all of Spencer.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., July 11, 2002, at Cummingsville Cemetery with Olan Mooneyham officiating.

Mary Delena Rascoe Short

Mary Delena Rascoe Short, 93, of Sparta, passed away on June 28, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
She was born December 24, 1908, in White County, to Joseph Oscar and Lydia Templeton Rascoe.
Short had been a teacher for the White County School system.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, William Everett Short.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Short of Knoxville and Keith Short of Murfreesboro; one daughter, Nancy Knight of Sparta; nine grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
Services were held on June 30, 2002, at Sparta First United Methodist Church with burial in Highland Cemetery. Susan Gardner officiated.

Will B. Weaver, 81, of Ferndale, Mich.,
passed away July 5, 2002 at Providence Hospital.
He was born April 11, 1921, in Sparta.
Weaver enjoyed working on his lawn and flowers and photography. He was an associate minister at the Church of Christ in Royal Oak, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, O. D. Weaver; and one sister, Nova Sidweel.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy; children, Linda and Bill Wiggins of Warren,

Ella Mae Jones Parker, 88, of Sparta, passed away July 8, 2002, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
She was born April 14, 1914, to Charlie and Mary Lollar Jones in Morgan County.
Parker had been a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin Parker; one son, Charles Royce Parker; two brothers, James A. (General) Jones and Leslie Jones; and one sister, Erma Lollar.

Jamie Lynn Pylant, 25, of Doyle, passed away July 8, 2002.
Pylant was born July 7. 1977, in Warren County, to Roger and Sandra Rowland.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph Alan Pylant; her parents; one sister, Vickie Merriman of Doyle; paternal grandfather, Tommy Rowland of Sparta; maternal grandmother, Ruby Randolph of McMinnville; and maternal grandfather, James O. Randolph of Doyle.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., July 11, 2002, at High Funeral Home Chapel in McMinnville with burial at McElroy Cemetery. Fate Wilson will officiate.

Alene Briggs Rozzell, 74, of Red Bank, passed away July 8, 2002.
Rozzell was a member of Eastdale Methodist Church and recently attended Red Bank Baptist Church. She retired from Olan Mills in April 2000.
