White County Sheriff Department is warning area residents about an alleged scam that involves e-mails from a company associated with a large parking lot company.
Detective Ruben Hormilla, of White County Sheriff Department, said he recently received a phone call the possible scam. After a preliminary investigation, Hormilla said he found the scam is nationwide.
Hormilla said two individuals claiming to be attorneys are reportedly sending e-mails to people claiming they owe unpaid parking violations to a company called Central Parking. According to Hormilla, the amounts range between $17 and $75.
Hormilla said the e-mail contains a phone number, but callers only get voice mail when they attempt to contact the attorneys.
“When they send an e-mail back, they get another e-mail saying if you want to pay the fine, you must do it on-line,” Hormilla said.
The address on the e-mail states the attorneys’ address is 23 Inverness Way E., Ste. 170, Englewood, Colo.
One of the individuals who contacted Hormilla said the license tag number listed on her e-mail was actually her husband’s tag number, but her husband has never been to Colorado.
Hormilla wants to warn White Countians if they receive an email such as this, do not respond. Call Hormilla immediately at 836-3607.
