Rev. Howard Leonard Russell

Howard Leonard Russell, 83,of East Ridge, passed away Aug. 22, 2006.
Russell was born, in Dunlap, to Rev. Emerson R. and Florence Whitlow Russell.
He had been a pastor of the New Covenant Church, in Chattanooga, since 1959. He had also been the pastor of the Main Street Church of God from 1954-1959, which he built debt free, and he served as District Overseer for the Church of God.
In addition to his ministerial duties, Russell also served as district manager for Gulf State Life Insurance Company, Life of Georgia and Kentucky Central Life Insurance. Russell also owned a car lot on Rossville Boulevard, was president of Russell Security from 1977-1986 and was owner of Russell Construction from 1986 until his death.
He was active in his church and community and also involved with the East Ridge Chamber of Commerce, East Ridge Library, Good Government League, and the Republican Party. Russell was a founding member of the East Ridge Sertoma Club and chairman and founding member of the Chattanooga Pachyderm Club.
For many years, Russell hosted a radio talk show in Sweetwater, and had various live and recorded broadcasts on WMOC, WJOC, WOWE, WRIP, Chattanooga Cable Channels 12 and 46, and a channel in Mt. Pleasant.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sarah Kathryn Haston Russell; and father-in-law, George Clyde Haston.
Survivors include one daughter, Marge Fryer; one son, Emerson Russell and wife Angela; two sisters, Alvine Hickey and husband Earl and Juanita Walker and husband Norman; six grandchildren, Angie Miller, Candice Hughes, Eddie Russell, Shely Kincer, Trey Searcy, and Kathryn Russell; 13 great-grandchildren, Samantha, Brandon, Brooke, and Jeff Miller, Aaron and Elijah Hughes, Ezekiel, Crayton and Lane Kincer, Presleigh Russell, Cetera, Morgan, and Sarah Searcy; one great-great-grandchild, Mekayla Swafford.
Services were 1 p.m., Aug. 25, 2006, at South Crest Chapel with burial in Haston Cemetery, in Spencer. Dr. Bill Owens, Congressman Zach Wamp, Commissioner Curtis Adams, Dr. John W. Boldt, Jr. and Rev. Johnny Godgiben officiated.
