Rising temps!

At this time of year, I always get a new appreciation for the dedication and strength that all the young men who play football put into that sport.
I’ve said before and I will say it again, it takes special young men to put on pads and go out in the heat and practice football.
Granted, all sports take dedication and hard work, but I think it would be hard to argue with the facts of what football players go through.  They not only practice outside in temperatures that near 100 degrees sometime, but they do this not in shorts and tee shirts.  They put on pads and helmets that probably increase their body temperature a good ten degrees.
I spent a couple of hours outside with them Tuesday while doing team pictures, group pictures and, well, a lot of pictures.  I was literally burning up and I was out there in shorts.  They had on their pads.  I thought I was going through heat exhaustion and all I was doing was standing taking pictures.
They had already practice once that day for two hours in the morning.  They were then back out there for a couple of hours of pictures and then changed from game uniforms to practice stuff still complete with pads and helmets.  They headed back out on the field for two more hours of practice.
I have figured out a little as to why we have trouble getting to play.  No doubt in my mind, you have to be tough to play the game.  Not just because they get hit on the field, but what they go through to get to play ten games, one per week.
To all of you guys that are out there competing, you have my utmost respect.  I couldn’t do it and there’s obviously only a select few that can handle it.  Keep working hard and remember, stay hydrated.
The bad thing is the temperatures are only going to continue to rise over the next couple of weeks.  The good news is I am going to be at the beach next week.  Oh, the good news was for me.  Of course, that might be good news for others too that they don’t have to put up with me for a week.
I usually try to take my vacation late in the summer so I have one big break before I start back full blast again.  I am going to Panama City Beach for a week with some friends.  I hate it that I have to miss a couple of football scrimmages, but then again it is the beach.
I will take this vacation and then pretty much be busy until the end of baseball season next year.  This trip to the beach will get me refreshed and ready to go for another year of sports activities.  Once high school sports start back, I don’t have a lot of free time to get away.
Never fear though, there will be a sports section while I am away.
