Small Business Saturday

Small Business Saturday is a day on which people are supposed to patronize small, brick and mortar businesses with their holiday shopping.
This observance, which is celebrated on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and is sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, was created by American Express, in 2010, who aggressively marketed it via social media, radio, and national television broadcasting. The event, which is now trademarked by the American Express, was such a success that the United Kingdom joined the movement in 2013.
Like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the main focus of this holiday is shopping. On Black Friday, Americans are expected to hit the big chain stores and do the bulk of their holiday shopping. On Cyber Monday, shoppers are expected to spend their money online. On Small Business Saturday people are expected to visit the smaller brick-and-mortar stores – otherwise known as “mom and pop stores” – the locally-owned-and operated shops that line the streets of every town throughout the country.
Sparta has an abundance of small businesses that patrons can visit and buy those specialty gifts, one-of-a-kind items, and gifts that show the recipient that thought and care went into choosing their gift. Just like big chain stores and online vendors, many of the small shops around Sparta will have in-store discounts, giveaways, and activities throughout shopping hours on Small Business Saturday.
While shopping is the main focus of this holiday, it is not a necessary component. There are ways for people to acknowledge this day even if they can’t participate in the actual shopping. Promoting the day on social media, sharing posts by local shops, and recommending a favorite small business to to friends and family are just as important and always appreciated by the owners of local small businesses.
