A Sparta man is facing embezzlement charges after Smithville Police and a food company investigator discovered several thousands of dollars missing from a Smithville grocery store.
Smithville Officer Gary Harris told The Middle Tennessee Times 25-year-old Brian Keith Brock, of Gaines Street, Sparta, was recently by Putnam County authorities and extradited to DeKalb County.
Brock was indicted on December 3 by the DeKalb County Grand Jury on charges he embezzled over $17,000 of funds from the Smithville Food Lion store.
Smithville Police say Food Lion’s Loss Prevention Investigator Kimberly Shrader approached them about the case on August 5. At that time, Shrader claimed almost $3,000 in cash was discovered missing from various deposits made from the store. The investigator also claimed the only employee who handled all the questioned deposits was Brock.
Authorities said when questioned about the missing money, Brock denied any responsibility and resigned his position from the store. Since that time, police and store investigators have discovered over $17,000 in funds was actually missing.
Once again, authorities said the only common denominator in the case was Brock had handled all the deposits where money had been discovered missing.
After additional investigation and Brock’s refusal to undertake a polygraph, the case was presented to the Grand Jury earlier this month.
Brock is charged with theft over $10,000 and is being held under a $10,000 bond.
