76-year-old injured in Thursday crash at Wilmar Market

A 76-year-old man was transported to Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta, after a two-vehicle crash, at approximately 4:55 p.m., June 2, 2022, on Highway 70, at Wilmar Market.

According to a report from Tennessee Highway Patrol, Jackie L. Underwood, 76, of Sparta, was traveling westbound, on Highway 70, driving a 2004 Mercury MGL. Underwood was beginning to attempt to turn into Wilmar Market’s parking lot. When he began this turn, he reportedly did not see the 2017 Nissan Rogue, which was sitting in the parking lot and attempting to pull out and head east. The Nissan Rogue was driven by David Wireman, 39, of Cookeville.

Underwood’s vehicle was damaged in the front end. Wireman’s vehicle had damage to the left side toward the front.

Underwood was wearing a seatbelt. He was injured and transported to Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta.

Wireman was not injured. He was also wearing a seatbelt. Wireman has been charged with driving on suspended license.

A juvenile passenger in Wireman’s vehicle was restrained in a forward-facing car seat and was not injured.

Lt. Charlie Caplinger and Trooper Thompson Cole Stickler, both with Tennessee Highway Patrol, responded to the scene.
