Body found near South Carter Park ruled self-inflicted death

A statement released from Mayor Jerry Lowery and Sparta City Hall, Sparta Police Department, and District Attorney General’s Office.

On 03/22/2023, at approximately 5:25 p.m., a passerby located what they believed to be a subject asleep off the side of the trail at South Carter Park.  The passerby contacted law enforcement, and officers arrived on the scene and located a deceased white male subject. The scene was secured, and investigators were called to the scene. Investigators from the Sparta Police Department, the 13th Judicial District Attorney General’s Office, and the White County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted the investigation.

The subject was reported missing by family members earlier in the day on 03/22/2023. According to family members, the subject was known to frequent that specific area. The investigators found no signs of foul play, and based on initial reports the incident is believed to be a self-inflicted death. The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
