Charles Beecher Lewis Jr., affectionately known as Chuck, a native of Sparta, passed away Feb. 16, 2021, at his residence.

Mr. Lewis was born Nov. 3, 1945, in Sparta, to Charles Beecher "C.B." Lewis Sr. and Charlie Mae Hudgens Lewis.

He retired as a colonel from the United States Army and was the first to teach at West Point Military Academy as a major. His military career actually started in the Marine Corps at the age of 17.

After retiring from active military duty, Mr. Lewis joined the Metro Davidson Police Department where he served on SWAT and CID. He was an avid fisherman with a love of fast cars and boats.

In his golden days, Mr. Lewis enjoyed spending his time with his two black cats, Blacky and Cutie. He was a member of Mt. Moriah #18, F&AM Masonic Lodge of Murfreesboro.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Katye Markada Lewis Arnold.

Surviving family members include his two sons, Mark Lee Lewis and wife Sara, of Nashville, Frank Lewis and wife Kristi, of Arkansas; two grandsons, Jordon Lewis, Spencer Lewis; sister, Elizabeth Lewis, of Nashville; and brother, John Lewis, of Smyrna.

Funeral service with Masonic Rites will be 2 p.m., Feb. 21, 2021, at Hunter Funeral Home. Ray Elder will officiate. Burial with full military honors by the U.S. Army Honor Guard will follow in Old Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends noon-2 p.m., Feb. 21, at the funeral home.

The United States Army Honor Guard will serve the family as pallbearers.

Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
