On March 13, 2023 at approximately 8:50pm Central View Volunteer Fire Department, Doyle Volunteer Fire Department, Mt. Gilead Volunteer Fire Department, and Hickory Valley Volunteer Fire Department units were dispatched to a reported commercial structure fire at 9068 McMinnville Highway, Savage Lumber. The first arriving fire unit arrived within 5 minutes of dispatch and reported a working fire.

A countywide call for manpower and water tankers was requested very early in the incident due to the size of the structure, volume of fire that was visible, and the lack of fire hydrants in the area. Fire units from all over White County including the Sparta Fire Department responded to assist. Due to a large number of White Counties fire resources being tied up for an extended period of time, Campaign-Rock Island Volunteer Fire Department was requested to respond to the scene and Putnam County Fire Department was requested to standby inside White County for response.

After approximately 4 hours, the fire was brought under control. Firefighters worked for another 2 hours ensuring that the fire was completely extinguished. The main sawmill sustained extensive heat and smoke damage. “Fire Crews from all over the county worked together and did an excellent job not only keeping the fire contained to one building, but also kept the fire from damaging a large portion of the equipment inside” said Central View Fire Chief Matt McBride. The fire is under investigation and any questions/inquiries should be directed to Central View Fire Chief Matt McBride. Central View Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank all agencies and personnel that responded to the scene and provided coverage during this incident.
