County commission discusses condition of the landfill

Speed limit reduced on Pistole Road

A big topic within the county recently has been that of the state of the county’s landfill.

At the October meeting, the White County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to remove language from a previous resolution that kept the landfill from accepting out-of-county trash. In rescinding the statement in the previous resolution, the board cleared the way for the county to accept trash from other counties once the permit for a new cell at the landfill is obtained. The resolution also stated that the county would charge a fee for trash brought in from other counties and that the trash would be received at the landfill only and no out-of-county trash would be accepted at convenience centers that are located throughout the county.

In other business, the board had 10 resolutions on their agenda, and they made quick work of agreeing unanimously on each of them as Roberts McCormick, chairman, read each one individually.

Resolution No 70-10-2022 reduced the speed limit on Pistole Road to 25 miles per hour beginning at the intersection of Burgess Falls Road and continuing until the road intersects with Howell Cemetery Road. From Howell Cemetery Road until the road intersects with Bunker Hill Road, the speed limit was set at 35 miles per hour.

All 14 commissioners also approved separate resolutions giving the county executive permission to enter into agreements with iWORQ to conduct a building software inspection and with Volunteer Wireless (doing business as Ben Lomand) to allow the company to have a franchise within the jurisdiction. In addition, the court passed a resolution to dispose of surplus vehicles and equipment within the county.

All resolutions from the county’s budget committee were also passed unanimously and without much discussion.

The board also approved five applications for notaries during their meeting: Pamela Hansen, Thomas DelPonte, Triva Gentry, Lauren Holman, and Jermaine Jackson

Before the meeting was adjourned, Junior Jones, White County assessor of property, addressed the commission.

“I am responsible for the largest revenue generator in the county, and I think it’s important for each and every one of you know how my office works,” he told the commissioners, seven of the 14 of which are new to the county’s governing body. “I invite you all to come by my office at your leisure.”

The next meeting of White County Board of Commissioners will be 6 p.m., Nov. 21, 2022, at the courthouse. On Nov. 7, Steering Committees A Steering Committee B, along with the budget committee, the solid waste committee, and other small committee meetings, will take place. All meetings are open to the public.
