Dam failure photos from Bridgestone-Firestone WMA

Posted

White County commissioners have received photos from the Bridgestone-Firestone Wilderness Management Area that show silt socks placement for sediment and erosion control at the dam breach site on both the impoundment and downstream side.

In addition, photos showing silt sock placement along areas where bare material may flow into the impoundment side of the remaining dam feature are included. A stream assessment was included as well.

According to documentation from Vincent L. Pontello (Assistant Chief, Biodiversity Division, Aquatics Program Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency), the area below the bluff is hazardous and potentially dangerous to crews that would be working by hand for sediment removal.  Pontello states TWRA staff who surveyed this area had to crawl down the embankments and expressed safety concern about the ability to remove material from each site listed.

Reportedly, TWRA engineering is working on replacing the silt socks with rock checks dams above and below the breech location.  The TWRA WMA staff will be seeding the bare areas to establish vegetative erosion control.

Pontella said corrective action plan will be submitted to Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
