Enzena Brown Pierce, 97, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 18, 2021, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta, from complications of COVID-19.

Mrs. Pierce was born Nov. 25, 1923, in the Pistole community of White County, to John Hobson Brown and Ann Bennett Brown.

She graduated, in 1946, from St. Thomas Nursing School, in Nashville. She participated in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps, which is a program of American nurses during World War II.

Mrs. Pierce married Thomas Raines Pierce from Obion County, on April 21, 1951, in Nashville. She worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital, on 21st Avenue, in Nashville, TB Hospital, in Nashville, and later at St. Thomas.

She retired from the State of Tennessee, working in public health at Wilson County Health Department. She and Thomas raised their family in Mt. Juliet before retiring to Sparta where they bought the Brown family home place.

Mrs. Pierce was a member of Pistole Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Raines Pierce, who died on Feb. 25, 2001; and recently, her daughter, Susan Elizabeth Pierce, on Dec. 11, 2020; and siblings, John H. Brown, Paris Brown, Mae McBride, Jewell Buck, and Gladys Carter.

Survivors include her daughter, Arrie Pierce Fuqua; grandson, Jordan Duncan and wife Yoko, of Sparta; grandchildren, Tanya Eller, Victoria Duncan, Natasha Duncan; sister, Elise Morris; and several nieces and nephews.

In consideration of the health and safety of family and friends, with the COVID-19 pandemic, a private graveside service, with honors by the Nurses Honor Guard, will be at Saylors Cemetery. Clint Walker will officiate.
