Firefighters battle rough terrain

Information provided by Mt. Gilead Volunteer Fire Department

At approximately 10:10 a.m., Feb. 4, 2021, a structure fire in the 2700 block, of Golden Mountain Road, was assigned to volunteers with the Cherry Creek, North End, and Cassville volunteer fire departments, as well as White County Sheriff’s Department and White County Emergency Medical Service.

Personnel at Sparta Fire Department quickly gathered a crew, ensuring the city was still covered, and responded as well because of the proximity to their station, on North Spring Street.

On arrival of fire personnel, it was quickly determined that fire engines would not be able to access the structure because of the condition of the driveway and the distance from the road. A call for brush trucks was made and added Mt. Gilead and Central View volunteer fire departments for that resource. Tennessee Division of Forestry was also requested for a dozer to plow around the property to help contain any potential fire spread.

Due to the limited water, access, and amount of fire involved; using the brush trucks, members could only prevent the fire from spreading into the fields and wooded areas surrounding the home and allowed the fire to consume what remained of the home once water was able to brought to the scene.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. A cause and origin investigation was conducted by on-scene crews and findings turned over to the sheriff’s department. The fire is listed as accidental at this time.
