From the Middle East to Middle Tennessee

There’s a guy who is mentioned a few times in the New Testament that possessed a unique, but not proprietary, quality. This man’s acts changed the course of lives and impacted the gospel from the Middle East of Jesus’ day all the way to Middle Tennessee, in 2021. His name was Andrew, and he didn’t raise people from the dead, he never spoke to the masses, he didn’t pack stadiums with his powerful preaching ability, and he never authored great books in the Bible. He did something far greater than these and that was to bring to Jesus the ones that would possess these great abilities.

Andrew was the older brother to Simon, also known as Peter. Their personalities and character differed greatly as did their roles in the kingdom of Christ. The brothers were very close and highly supportive of one another. Peter rose to fame with his sermon to the masses on the day of Pentecost. Three thousand souls were led to Christ that day by the man whom Andrew brought to Jesus. Andrew is known by the Greek meaning of his name as “manly.” He is known as “the first apostle” chosen by Jesus to follow him. He was among the inner circle of four, which included James and John and his own brother Peter. Andrew however, is also known as “the bringer” because of his ability to bring people to the Savior.

Unlike Peter’s ability to speak and John’s writing skills, Andrew possessed a quality that is available to each and every one of us today and that is the invitation. Without Andrew’s invitation to Peter, we would not have one of the greatest leaders and ministers of the gospel the world has ever known. The invitation is the most important aspect of any great outreach because it’s the beginning, and, without a beginning, there can be no middle or end. It is recorded that after Peter spoke at Pentecost, Andrew said to him that “he could have never done what Peter had just accomplished” to which Peter replied “none of this would have been possible if you had not brought me to Jesus to begin with.”

Andrew was a bringer and so are you. The question is, who will you bring to Jesus? They may or may not be the next great orator for the gospel. They may not be the next leader of the church. The next person may be a kid with a lunchbox full of bread and fish. Every invitation matters!

I invite you to matter. Come see us at Christpoint Church, on the square, in Sparta. We will meet you at the door at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. We’re real people, living real lives, serving a real God. Welcome home.
