Golden Eagle baseball team kicks off 2022 campaign at South Alabama Invitational

Tennessee Tech baseball weekend preview (Feb. 18-20)

The 2022 campaign is officially ready to commence for the Tennessee Tech baseball team, with the Golden Eagles set to compete at the South Alabama Invitational Friday, Feb. 18 through Sunday, Feb. 20.

The purple and gold will kick off the second Matt Bragga era on Friday with a noon CT tilt with Oral Roberts and follow with another noon showdown against Radford on Saturday. Play wraps up Sunday afternoon with a 3:00 p.m. contest against host South Alabama.

Live stats will be provided for each contest. Tech's Sunday affair with the Jaguars will be streamed live on ESPN+.

Returning as the head coach of the Golden Eagle program Bragga will head into his 16th season overall at the helm of the Cookeville crew, boasting 446 wins in the purple and gold and 497 total in his career. Last season, Tech finished 22-25 with a 15-15 mark in Ohio Valley Conference play.

Back for the 2022 campaign is All-OVC Second Team first baseman Golston Gillespie, who racked up 13 home runs and 37 RBI with a .302 batting average in his first season at Tech last season. Shortstop Ed Johnson also returns after a spectacular first season in Cookeville, batting .331 with 44 runs scored while being named a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award.

Slugger Jason Hinchman enters his final year in Cookeville with a whopping 44 home runs to his credit, already ranked fifth on Tech's all-time career list. The senior tallied 11 long balls and 35 RBI while finishing a team-best 13-of-13 on stolen base attempts.

The Tech roster welcomes 23 newcomers to the mix for the 2022 season, including nine position players, 12 pitchers and two utility players.
