Golden Eagles add six on National Signing Day

 It was a busy morning, on Feb. 3, for Dewayne Alexander and the Tennessee Tech football team on Wednesday as the staff anxiously awaited the paperwork for the newest Golden Eagle football players. After everything was wrapped up, the Golden Eagles added six to a class that strengthens the roster and brings some exciting newcomers to the team.

Wednesday's signees include:

James Smith (DE, 6-2, 245, Suwanee, Ga. Collins Hill HS)

Another defensive pick that garnered a lot of attention, Smith finished the 2020 campaign with 180 total tackles, averaging 12 per game with 168 solo stops and 61 tackles for loss. He had 17 total sacks and 40 QB hurries en route to a selection as the Gwinnett Daily Post Co-Defensive Player of the Year.

He helped lead Collins Hill to its best finish in school history and a runner-up finish in the Georgia Class AAAAAAA finals.

Jayvian Allen (ATH, 5-8, 187, Loganville, Ga., Grayson HS)

Allen helped lead the Rams, the No. 2-ranked team in the country, to the Class AAAAAAA state title, rushing for three touchdowns and intercepting a pass in the championship game. For the season, he recorded 103 tackles, four interceptions and 10 forced fumbles.

Allen transferred to Grayson from Long Island's Freeport High School after high school sports were canceled in New York. He earned a Newsday first-team All-Long Island selection as a junior and was among the country's top tacklers. He was named all-state twice in New York and was the Class AAAAAAA Player of the Year in Georgia.

Allen was also selected to the 2020 MaxPreps All-America second-team squad, the only Football Championship Subdivision signee among the honorees.

Zion Robb (OL, 6-2, 330, Gallatin, Tenn., Gallatin HS)

Zion saw plenty of action as a lineman for Gallatin, proving himself as one of the top linemen in the state. As a defensive lineman, Robb recorded 21 tackles, a fumble recovery and four sacks as a junior. This past season, Robb earned a first-team all-Region selection, as well as 1st Team All-Sumner County and an East/West All-Star Selection.

Louis "Trey" Lubin III (DB, 5-11, 170, Orlando, Fla., Timber Creek HS)

Lubin helped lead Timber Creek High to a 17-3 record over the past two seasons, as well as the metro/district titles and two county all-star game selections. A multi-sport athlete, Lubin has also excelled in track and field in the high jump, long jump and triple jump, setting the school record in the latter and qualifying for the state meet.

A three-star garnering attention from several FBS programs, Lubin finished the 2020 season with 22 total tackles, including four for-loss, while defending four passes and intercepting one. He also served as a returner for the team. He finished his career with 138 tackles, 10 interceptions and 10 pass deflections.

Maxwell Battle (DB, 5-11, 165, Nashville, Tenn., MBA)

Battle is certainly no stranger to Tucker Stadium with TSSAA BlueCross Bowl appearances in Cookeville, and he comes from one of the traditional high school football powers in the state. Battle finished the 2020 campaign with 31 total tackles – 20 solo and 11 assists – while also intercepting four passes for 61 yards. He was also an honorable mention Division II-AAA West selection.

Christian Thomas (OT, 6-6, 320, Delray Beach, Fla., Atlantic HS)

An all-county second-team selection, Thomas was a crucial part of an Atlantic offensive unit that averaged 141.7 passing yards and 194.0 rushing yards a game.
