Horace G. Prater, 85, of Sparta, passed away July 25, 2024, at Wyndridge Health and Rehabilitation, in Crossville.
Horace was born Feb. 2, 1939, at Sunset Rock, on his way to the hospital to be delivered, to Johnnie Mae and Thelma Rhea Hodge Prater.
Horace was owner of Prater’s Home Improvement, specializing in new home construction and, in recent years, mostly home renovations. Horace was a proud veteran of the United States Navy. He was an active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher. He loved gardening, but his greatest love was being Pa for his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Earl Prater and Bobby Prater.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Thelma Nash Prater; son, Mike Prater; grandchildren, Michelle (John) Ward, Kayla (Matthew) Turner, Michael Prater; great-grandchildren, Khloe and Kassie Ward, Melodee and Axel Turner; stepson, Billy Wayne Dulin; brothers, David (Sandy) Prater, Rufus (Regina) Prater; sister, Joann (Kenny) Gouge; and sister-in-law, Janice Prater.
In honor of Horace’s wishes, Hunter Funeral Home has been entrusted with his cremation. No services are planned at this time
