(Dec. 8, 2021) - Ascension Saint Thomas Highlands presented a donation in the amount of $2,500 to the White County Middle School PBIS Program. (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support). This donation was in partnership with the Medxcel Team at Ascension Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital in Sparta. CAO Bob Peglow presented the check to support the ongoing program to incentivise students to make scholastic improvements across the school year, along with reducing absences and tardies.

"We are so very grateful to our local hospital for supporting this program in such a huge way. Community partners like Ascension Saint Thomas Highlands help us to grow the footprint of assistance and encouragement for our students, and makes our school a better place." said White County Middle School Principal Farrah Griffith.

"Our goal as a hospital, and as a system, is to be the 'partner of choice' in our community.," said hospital CAO Bob Peglow, "We are honored to support great opportunities such as this to empower our students, who are the future leaders and employees of White County. These funds were provided by recycling efforts of copper wire during the construction phase of a new CT scanner installation and electrical circuit upgrade installed at our hospital in September. Our Medxcel Manager, David Cantrell, and his team, reached out to see how they could use this additional resource to make a difference in our community, and supporting our students to succeed seemed like a wonderful choice."

"The PBIS Program is designed to help students improve their performance a little at a time. The goals are attainable, and has allowed us to focus on the positives for every student. This allows all students to feel successful by completing goals such as raising their performance at any level - whether it be a raised grade, fewer tardies or better attendance. So often, the same top performing students are recognized in a school setting, with the bulk of students never being acknowledged or rewarded in any way. With PBIS, every student is given an opportunity to succeed and have themselves celebrated for their positive behavior or improved grades, etc. Especially during this challenging time, our kids really need this kind of positivity in their lives. We all do." said teacher Sara Haliburton.
