As much history as I have studied in my lifetime about Sparta, I had never known about J.B. Hunter's experiences in World War II. Mr. Hunter, as most of us know, is the father of John Hunter, who has been an active and vital member of our community his entire life and is owner of Hunter Funeral Home. Thanks to Lonnie Carr, of Sparta, I am sharing these excerpts from The Expositor. I also am sharing the trailer for the movie "Flight Command," which I have watched more times than I can count. Little did I know I would discover that J.B. Hunter was one of the legendary "Hellcats." In the movie, Walter Pidgeon opens the trailer, identifying himself as the character he plays in the move, Bill Gary.
