John “Johnny” Donald Floyd, 92, (Retired Lieutenant Colonel), of Sparta, passed away peacefully, on July 22, 2024, at his residence.
Johnny was born April 11, 1932, in Sparta, to James Glenn and Carrie Agnes Little Floyd.
He married the love of his life, Jacquelin Randolph Harvey, on Oct 16, 1955.
He was a 1950 graduate of White County High School.
In 1954, he received his Chemistry Major from Vanderbilt University, Nashville. Johnny served as an officer in the United States Army from January 1955 until he retired in December 1979. He bravely served two tours in Vietnam as an army helicopter pilot and had a remarkable and decorated military career to include the following medals and awards: Distinguished Flying Cross with 2 bronze oak leaf clusters, Bronze Star Medal with 2 bronze oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with numeral 35, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 bronze service stars, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon W/Device (1960), Army Aviator Master Badge.
In 1979, Johnny retired from military service and lived in Ratcliff, Kentucky. He later moved to Aiken, South Carolina, from 2010 to 2023, to live closer to his son and grandchildren. On Nov 1, 2023, Johnny moved to Florida when his son David retired to enjoy the sunshine and remaining life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jacquelin Randolph Harvey; his son, James Proctor; his parents, James Glenn and Carrie Agnus Floyd; and his siblings James (Jimmy) Floyd and Sarah Hopp.
He is survived by his two sons, John (Trang), of Honolulu, Hawaii, David (Laurie), of Punta Gorda, Florida; his grandchildren, Dana (Jim), of Honolulu, Hawaii, Brandon, of Portland, Oregon, Jaimee (Wes) Weigle, of Kingwood, Texas, Gary (Athena), of Thomson, Georgia, Greg (Margaret), of Lexington, South Carolina; great-grandchildren, Brooks, Ethan, Harvey, Leo and Eloise Weigle, Kingston and Stellan Floyd, Adeline and Emmett Floyd; his niece, Kathryn (Patric) Dolan, of Brielle, New Jersey; his nephew, Tim Floyd, of Nashville; niece, Beth Floyd, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; nephew, Kevin (Laura) Saylors, of Belton, Texas; niece, Kimberly (Rob) Maupin, of Blue Ridge, Virginia.
A graveside service, with military honors, will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Virginia, at a later time.
