Destinee Johnson is looking forward to embracing her role as a senior leader on next year’s White County High School cheer team and hopes to be able to mentor some of her younger teammates during her final season as a Warrior cheerleader.
“I have been cheering since fifth grade, and I have built so many relationships in cheer,” Johnson said. “I have friends that I would have never had if it wasn’t for cheer. It has given me more of a family and a sense of purpose. A place to refocus after a bad day or celebrate after a great one.”
Johnson said she hopes she can help the underclassman on her squad have that same experience and help them establish some of those relationships over her final season.
“I think the girls will look up to me more now that I am a senior. I hope that they know that they can trust me and that, if they need me for any reason, they can come to me,” Johnson said. “Whether it’s something at home or at cheer or in the classroom, they know that they can come to me about it.”
Johnson said her goal for this season is to soak in every minute of it and enjoy being with her cheer family.
“I think it’s being with this group one more time,” she said when asked what she was most looking forward to in the upcoming season. “Of course, I am excited to see how much we improve this year compared to seasons in the past.”
As for how to achieve that improvement, Johnson said that she is going to encourage her teammates to focus on the mantra that has carried her throughout her eight-year cheerleading career, “you get what you work for,” and hope that together they can work for bigger and better things.
“This season is going to be a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to get it going,” she said.
