Josie Griggs wins National Health Information Scholarship

(Jan. 9, 2023) - Josie Griggs, a resident of Sparta, has been honored as one of 15 health information students in the country to win a 2022 college scholarship from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Foundation, the national nonprofit organization and philanthropic arm of AHIMA dedicated to empowering people with health information literacy to achieve better health outcomes.

Josie is pursuing an Associate's Degree in Applied Science for Health Information Technology at Volunteer State Community College. She will receive a $3,000 scholarship — commensurate with the cost of an entire course.

“As a future health information professional, I would like to ensure that individuals ─ regardless of their age ─ are provided with the assistance and assurance they need to use and access digital health,” wrote Josie in her scholarship essay. “My eight-five-year-old grandfather undoubtedly has the intelligence and skills needed to use and understand technology, however, his age may lead health professionals to assume he wouldn’t have the ability to learn.”

“We congratulate the recipients of AHIMA Foundation’s 2022 scholarship program and send our gratitude to our generous donors and volunteers for making this program possible annually,” said Anisa Tootla, AHIMA Foundation Executive Director.
