LIFE FORCE Air Medical pilot Mel Hughes was recently awarded the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. Hughes joined LIFE FORCE nearly 30 years ago after serving as a military pilot for many years. He is currently stationed at LIFE FORCE 2 base, in Sparta.

The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award is the most prestigious award the Federal Aviation Administration (FFA) issues to pilots who are certified under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) part 61 – for pilots, flight instructors and ground instructors. To be eligible for the award, the nominee must hold a U.S. Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) or FFA pilot certificate and have 50 or more years of civil and military flying experience.

“Mel is one of the most experienced pilots we have within the LIFE FORCE program, and he is a cornerstone for what has made our program so successful throughout the years,” said LIFE FORCE Senior Director Robbie Tester. “The entire LIFE FORCE team would like to congratulate Mel on this award. We cannot express our appreciation enough for all that he has done for the program through his years of service.”

This award is named after the Wright Brothers, the first U.S. pilots, to recognize individuals who have exhibited professionalism, skill and aviation expertise for at least 50 years while piloting aircraft as “Master Pilots.”
