Merriman named Motlow Student of Distinction

Trevin Merriman is part of Motlow State Community College’s first cohort group going through the Sparta Paramedic Program.

Sparta’s program, which took three years to develop and included securing thousands of dollars in grants and local funds, makes it possible for students like Merriman to pursue their desired career.

“It is a blessing to have a short drive for those of us who have to work but still want to go to school,” Merriman, who is a 2006 graduate of Warren County High School and is currently employed with DeKalb County EMS, said. “I’m really grateful to those who worked to develop the school and the Paramedic Program in Sparta.”

After graduating from high school, Merriman began his post-secondary education by taking online classes with the intent of becoming a mechanic. But the single father of a now 6-year-old little girl found his true calling after working with the sheriff’s department and volunteering with the rescue squad.

‘While working with the rescue squad, I found my passion,” Merriman said, acknowledging that he was more intrigued with fixing people than he was with fixing cars.  “I have a strong desire to help people, and, if I can help save lives, that’s a bonus.”

Merriman enrolled in classes through the Motlow State Community College McMinnville Campus and worked his way through EMT Basic and EMT Advanced Classes. Being able to enroll in the Paramedic Program on the Sparta Campus, meant that he could avoid a long drive to the Smyrna Campus after having worked all day.

This month, Merriman was selected as the Motlow Student of Distinction by the College Advisory Partnership that aids the Sparta Campus. President of the CAP Bobby Officer presented the Paramedic-in-Training with a $50 Amazon Gift Card sponsored by Citizens Bank.
