As the hot days of summer transition into the crisp, colorful season of fall, we find ourselves in a time of change and new beginnings. The air is cooling, the leaves will be turning brilliant shades of color, and it’s time to begin a new school year.
With the start of school, our streets are once again busy with more traffic and buses around our schools. This is a time of great enthusiasm and promise for our young learners, and it is also a time when we must all be extra vigilant to ensure their safety.
I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of being cautious and attentive in and around school zones. Here are a few key safety tips to keep in mind:
(1) Observe Speed Limits: School zones have reduced speed limits for a reason. Slowing down helps protect our children and gives drivers more time to react to unexpected movements.
(2) Watch for Pedestrians: Children (and adults) can be unpredictable. Always be on the lookout for young pedestrians along our sidewalks
(3) Obey Traffic Guards: Traffic guards are there to help our children make it to school and allow the traffic to move easier in and out of the schools. Please follow their signals and instructions without hesitation.
(4) Avoid Distractions: Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of accidents. Put away your phone and focus on the road, especially in our school zones.
(5) Be Mindful of Buses: School buses make frequent stops. Be prepared to stop when you see flashing red lights and the stop arm extended. Never pass a bus from behind when it is loading or unloading children.
As we embrace the beauty and transformation that fall brings, let us also embrace the responsibility we share in keeping our community safe. By working together and staying vigilant, we can ensure that our children have a safe and enjoyable journey to and from school.
Thank you for your attention to these important matters. Let’s make this season one of safety, learning, and community spirit.
Be safe out there. Finish strong.
