Nestled in the heart of Sparta, Mountain Sno and Salads to Go has grown from a humble shaved ice shack to a beloved local spot offering a variety of treats year-round.
Originally opening their doors 22 years ago, on Bockman Way, the business initially catered to summer crowds with its refreshing shaved ice treats. Fast forward to today, and Mountain Sno and Salads to Go has become a fixture across the street in a permanent location where they have been serving customers for the past seven years.
The move to a permanent structure marked a significant expansion for the business, enabling them to introduce a year-round salad bar and a delectable array of paninis. Every Tuesday, locals can enjoy taco salads, while Thursdays are celebrated for their baked potato bar specials. As the weather cools in the fall, the menu adapts with hearty offerings from their soup and chili bars.
“We’ve come a long way from our early days,” reflects Debbie Remillard, the owner who started the venture to keep busy during summers away from her job in the public school system. “I wanted something to do in the off-season and a way to provide summer jobs for my teenage children.”
The evolution didn’t stop with a permanent location and expanded menu. Mountain Sno and Salads to Go also operates a shaved ice truck, which has become a favorite at weddings, VBS events, schools, and local fairs such as the White and Warren County agriculture fairs. Bookings for the cart require a minimum purchase of $100, equivalent to 40 mini shaved ice treats, making it accessible for various events in the community.
Remillard’s husband operated the business during the school year while she continued to work in the school system until her retirement in 2020. Now, the pair can both be found at Mountain Sno and Salads to Go ensuring the business continues to thrive with a dedicated staff of five to six employees.
As they look to the future, the team remains committed to serving up delicious fare and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that keeps customers coming back, season after season.
