Outdoor pickleball league starting at West End Park

(May 14, 2021) - Locals now have an opportunity to play pickleball in the morning sun.

Cookeville Leisure Services is offering an outdoor pickleball league on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, June 7-July 23, from 9-11 a.m. on the newly resurfaced court at West End Park. It’s a way to fill the summer gap for pickleball regulars who will be unable to play at Cane Creek Gymnasium during the times youth camps are held.

“We hope that our regular pickleballers have a fun time playing outdoor pickleball,” Tyler Johnson, Leisure Services athletic coordinator, said. “We also encourage new players to take this opportunity to experience pickleball firsthand.”

The league is open to ages 18 and up. Registration is $10 per player, and the deadline to sign up is May 28.

Each player will partner with all other players at least once and receive points for games played and wins. Matchups will be decided by staff, who will be on site at 609 West End St. for scorekeeping. The top three point-earners will be awarded a 35/30 pass, which allows 35 free visits to Cane Creek Gymnasium.

Pickleball is a paddleball sport for two to four players that combines elements of tennis, ping-pong and badminton. Players use a solid paddle to hit a plastic ball (similar to a whiffle ball) over a net.

“If you’re looking for a sport that’s fun, entertaining and great for exercise, sign up for our outdoor pickleball league,” Johnson said.

To register, call 931-520-5224 or visit www.cookeville-tn.gov/ls to see athletics offerings.
