Putnam County sheriff supports 'Truth in Sentencing' legislation

Posted

Sheriff Eddie Farris, of Putnam County, released the following statement about recent legislation passed by the Tennessee General Assembly:

“I am proud to support the Truth in Sentencing legislation recently passed by the Tennessee General Assembly. I am thankful for Speaker Cameron Sexton, who represents part of Putnam County, and his willingness to sponsor this legislation, along with Tennessee’s lieutenant governor, Randy McNally.

“This legislation sends a strong message to criminals by targeting those who commit sexual assault and crimes against children by making sure these offenders stay in jail for their entire sentence without having their time reduced by credits. Not only will this punish criminals more effectively, but it also helps protect the victims of those crimes when the offenders are in jail longer. This makes Putnam County and all of Tennessee a safer place to live.”

HB 2656 / SB 2248 was passed by the Tennessee Senate and House of Representatives and eliminates early release for most violent crimes and limits early release for multiple other offenses.
