Roberts back in spring training

Minor league opening day set for May 4

Sparta’s own Ethan Roberts, who was drafted by the Chicago Cubs organization in 2018, is back in action after a year where minor league baseball was cancelled.

While major league ball entered spring training in March and saw their 2021 opening day, on April 1, for what they hope will be a complete season after having a shortened 60-game season in 2020, the minor league players didn’t report for spring training until the big leaguers headed to their home stadiums.

For Roberts, that meant heading to Arizona, on March 30. After more than a year with no competitive ball, Roberts headed out, intent on proving he was ready for the next step in his career.

Roberts used the paused 2020 year to spend time conditioning, working on his pitch delivery, and staying focused – all while sharing his love for the game and the knowledge he has gained over a lifetime on the mound with local young athletes and pitching hopefuls.

As he enters the third week of spring training, Roberts remains hopeful that he will complete spring training strong and land a spot on the Cubs’ AA Team, the Tennessee Smokies, and play his home games just a few hours east of Sparta, in Sevierville.

Roberts has already pitched two strong outings and is gearing up for the minor league opening day, on May 4.
