A project that has been in the works for half a decade has finally reached the stage where production will begin, and, to celebrate that, the Rotary Club of Sparta recently presented the City of Sparta with a grant check in the amount of $14,000 to assist in the costs for materials and construction that will begin on the gateway monument signs later this summer.

“I would like to thank the Sparta Rotary Club for their outstanding commitment to serving our community,” Sparta Mayor Jeff Young said. “The Sparta Gateway Monument Project would probably never have happened if not for the patience and commitment to making our community a wonderful place to live from many people. Special thanks to the Sparta Rotary Club, State Senator Paul Bailey, State Representative Paul Sherrell, TDOT [Tennessee Department of Transportation] and our city board members and staff.”

Michael Hale, the Rotary Club’s president-elect, was on hand to present the check to Young but said the credit and thanks go to Donna Fare and John Downs, the Rotarians who spearheaded the project and worked continuously to see it become a reality.

“The Gateway signs are the product of over five years of effort between the Rotary Club of Sparta and the City of Sparta,” Hale said. “We believe the signs will beautify the community while also attracting tourists, customers, and potential residents to Sparta. We are proud of this community, and this is our way of welcoming others to it.”

Construction of the signs, which will be erected alongside Highway 111 at both the southern and northern city limit lines, will be done by White County company J.A. Sergio and Sons Inc. The company offered a winning bid of $57,400 to which the grant check from the Rotary Club will be applied, reducing the cost to the city.

Young said, “These gateway monuments will be a beautiful way of welcoming people to our amazing community.”
