As part of their Children’s Summer Reading Program, the White County Public Library As part of their Children’s Summer Reading Program, the White County Public Library hosted a Science Day event for the youth. On June 12, the Science Guys performed various small experiments for the attendees, teaching and encouraging their young minds.
The library thanked their sponsors just as they did during their puppet show a week prior. The Health Department was set up just like last time, and they had on lab coat attire to match the theme. The Dollar General Literacy Foundation was once again thanked for their support this year, with a handful of reading material presented for the children after the event.
The Science Guy himself, Jupiter, introduced several small and safe experiments to the children. The first of the experiments was introducing the light spectrum. Getting some volunteers, Jupiter had the kids write small messages on an ultraviolet board while the lights were off.
The next experiment had two children volunteer to direct laser pointers at the roof. Jupiter challenged the children to see who could tag the other’s laser first. All the while, Jupiter tossed powder to the air that showed the lasers in the air, rather than just the point. The children were particularly excited watching this experiment.
Another experiment was showing attendees a small laser that would pop a balloon, as long as it was a different color. Children got to hold the balloon before it popped, and they wore protective sunglasses so the laser light would not touch their eyes.
After all the experiments, the children were treated to a free lunch. All the events planned for the Summer Reading Program will be offering free lunches to the youth.
The rest of the events for the Summer Reading Program all fall on Thursdays as well over the next few weeks, with June 19 not having an event for the holiday. June 26 is the Animal Show, July 3 is the Bright Star Theatre showing, and July 10 the Water Fun Day.
