Phase one of plan to install several pieces of recreational equipment

Sparta-White County Family YMCA got a long-anticipated addition to their facility when a 22-foot spiral flume slide was installed at their swimming pool, on July 27.

“We apologize for the delay,” YMCA CEO Kyle Goff said. “The slide was supposed to be here at the beginning of the season but was delayed due to closures surrounding COVID-19.”

The slide, which has an 8-foot deck with a 22-foot spiral flume that lands riders smoothly into the 5-foot-deep section of the pool, is safe for all ages unless otherwise determined for safety purposes by a YMCA certified lifeguard who will be stationed beside the slide.

“We strategically placed this slide in the shallow end so it is safe for young children, but adults can use it as well,” Goff explained.

Goff said the slide was positioned near the corner that separates the shallow and lap swim area of the pool from the deep end, which once housed diving boards.

“This is phase one of a larger plan to install several pieces of recreational equipment over the next three years,” Goff continued.

He explained plans are in place to update the YMCA swimming facility to provide the White County community with additional forms of water recreation in the summers to come.

“Steps are already being taken to make sure more improvements are in next year’s budget,” Goff said. “Kids have desperately needed a safe place to go and have social interaction during this pandemic. I hope we have provided some connectivity for the youth (and kids at heart) in the community,” Goff  said. “Be on the lookout for bigger things to come next year.”

The YMCA pool is open 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Thursday; 11 a.m.-8 p.m., on Friday; and 11 a.m.-4 p.m., on Saturday. Once school starts, the YMCA will focus on “after school” activity. Projected school hours are on the YMCA’s  website. Private parties are available. Call (931) 836-3330 or email info@spartawhitecountyymca.org to check availability. Unlimited pool passes are still available, and prices have been reduced by 50 percent.
