White County Board of Education held two meetings in June, the first, on June 1, to approve the general purpose school budget and the nutrition budget for the upcoming fiscal year, and the second as their regularly scheduled monthly meeting.

After much discussion about each line item, the board ultimately passed the general purpose school budget with a vote of six in favor of the budget as it was written and one, Dewayne Howard, against the proposed budget. The school nutrition budget passed with all seven board members approving it as written.

During the regularly scheduled meeting of White County School Board, which was June 10, the board approved the formation of a new subcommittee.

Bob Young, from district two, was selected as chairman of a new subcommittee to study the long-range plans for the Central View property that includes the old elementary school, which the district closed at the end of the 2018 school year. Kay Prater, who represents district six, which includes the Central View community, and Kenneth Robinson, who is the longest-serving board member and represents district seven, will serve on the subcommittee with Young. Additionally, the new subcommittee will include members from the county government and residents from the Central View community who will be named later.

Other items on the June 10 agenda included approving the 2021-2022 school board meeting schedule as well as approving several volunteer coaches to assist White County athletic teams in the upcoming school year.

The school board will continue to meet at 6 p.m., on the second Thursday of each month, except in the month of October when the meeting will be moved to the third Thursday because of fall break.  The meetings will rotate throughout the district’s schools, giving each the opportunity to highlight their programs, faculty, and students.

In other items of business, Lauren Turner was approved as volunteer volleyball coach for White County High School, and Briana Mitchell was approved as a volunteer coach for the White County Middle School softball program. Both Darin Cole and Jonathan Wilkerson were added to the Warriors’ baseball coaching staff as volunteers as well.

The board heard:

  • Reports from the policy committee
  • Maintenance reports from Robinson, which included an announcement the roofing of Northfield Elementary and White County Middle School may be delayed until August because of availability of supplies needed
  • School improvement reports from Dewayne Howard
  • Budget updates from Adam Hickey
  • Tennessee Legal News updates from Diana Haston

Before adjourning, the board approved renewing their contract with the Tennessee School Boards Association to allow them to continue to provide guidance for the development and utilization of the district’s policy manual, something that is done regularly.

The next meeting of the White County School Board is scheduled for 6 p.m., July 8, 2021, at White County Board of Education, on Hale Street.
