Tennessee Tech hosts Tennessee Leadership Summit

June 19-24, Tennessee Tech University’s campus became home to about 81 high school student leaders from across the state who participated in the annual Tennessee Leadership Summit.

Tech’s College of Agriculture and Human Ecology, in partnership with Farm Bureau, provided sessions to upcoming 11th and 12th graders that focused on leadership, cooperation, service and developing an understanding of the critical importance of Tennessee’s agriculture industry. Students stayed on campus for the week while going through the program.

“Students will identify and utilize their leadership attributes to work more effectively in teams, give back to the Cookeville community, and be change agents in their local communities,” said Dennis Duncan, professor of agricultural education at Tech and leader of the summit. “They will also gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the role agriculture plays in the economy, food production, etc.”

The first day focused on learning their individual leadership styles. Then the sessions turned to learning how to use their individual strengths effectively in a team environment. Next, the students got the chance to work with non-profit organizations in Cookeville and then they learned about agriculture and how it affects the Tennessee, United States and global economies, and they wrapped up the week with reviews and breakout sessions.

Once completing the summit, students also have the option of completing a dual-enrollment, 3-credit course on leadership and community action through Tech.
