Thanksgiving luncheon honors veterans for their service

Cards from school children presented to those in attendance

Ninety-two veterans and their friends and families gathered at Sparta’s American Legion building, on Nov. 21, to enjoy a time of thanksgiving.

The event, named Thanksgiving Dinner with a Veteran, was co-sponsored by Miss Marenda’s Tea Room and Clean Heart Christian Ministries. In addition to a turkey dinner, guests were given cards made by White County school children who wanted to express their thanks to the men and women who served in the military. Zade Brown, a fifth grader at Findlay Elementary School, brought the cards to the luncheon and presented them to the veterans.

With nothing on the agenda except spending time socializing with friends and families, reminiscing about old times, and enjoying an afternoon of fellowship, the group was welcomed by retired Navy captain and a member of the team at Clean Hearts Christian Ministries Bill Rabchenia before they turned their attention to enjoying their meals, talking with their neighbors, and having a “good o’ ‘Corn Toss’ tournament” complete with tournament prizes provided by Rise & Shine Café 2 and C & H Donuts.

“Our Thanksgiving dinner with a veteran was a rousing success,” Steve Colquitt, director at Clean Hearts Christian Ministries, said. “It was a blessing to see so many veterans enjoying a time of thanksgiving.”

Colquitt said the entire event could not have been possible without the organizational team of Tammy Halliburton, Sherry Taylor, Jerri Holder, Susan Colquitt, Tabitha Lawson, Brenda Pope, Debbie Copeland, Caden Davis, Gail Lawson, Kathy Driver, and Rhonda Frazier.
