1971 

  • Dale England’s Angus won the top prize in the 28th annual Commerce Union Bank Finished Steer Show.
  • Sparta First Federal Savings and Loan held its grand opening celebration. Earl Sims was manager of the bank, and employees Becky Taylor and Mrs. Claude Austin were present at the event. It was estimated that 1,200 people attended the grand opening.
  • The court decided to vote down a proposal to build a new jail in White County despite the statement from Judge Roberts stating he believed that the new jail was needed “in the worst way.”

1981

  • White County Middle School beat Livingston Academy 25-23 to become the Deberry Open Tournament State Champions.
  • The White County G.F.W.C. Renaissance Club donated child safety seats to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The seats were purchased with money the club had raised during their pecan sale. The group was trying to help parents keep their children safe with the inception of the child restraint law four years earlier that required children under the age of 4 be placed in child restraint seats.

1991

  • Vandals stole the antenna from local radio station WSMT-FM knocking the local station of the air and instead broadcasting a Nashville television station. Listeners heard game shows and soap operas instead of the normal radio programming. To accomplish the feat, the vandals had climbed up 50 feet of the 200-foot-high tower to reach the antenna.
  • The fire-damaged building at 14 N. Main St. was slated to be torn down after the building had been sitting, unrepaired, for four years and had been classified as a danger by the city administration. Sparta’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen began soliciting bids for the demolition.
  • Kathryn Officer was crowned Sparta/White County’s first Miss Christmas. Officer was a junior at Tennessee Tech and was chosen from a field of ten contestants.

2001

  • New caution lights were installed at the intersection of Highway 111 and Roosevelt Drive, the site of many traffic accidents over the years. Yellow caution lights were installed for both the northbound and south-bound lanes of the highway.
  • Three people were nominated, and accepted, for membership into the Sparta-White County Chamber of Commerce. Bart Walker of Life Care Center, Roy Whited of Tri Star Realty, and Melinda Williams of Preferred Logistics became the newest members of the organization.
  • Caney Fork Electric Cooperative held their 11th annual Holiday Festive Foods program. Vicki Messick hosted the event in which food was prepared and guests learned how to make inexpensive Christmas ornaments.

2011

  • Dr. Alan Drake was honored with a “Meritorious Service Award” by the Tennessee Hospital Association for his commitment to serving his patients, the local hospital, and the White County community.
  • The distance learning center at White County High School was completed and plans began being made to create security vestibules at all county schools over the following summer months.
  • The long-awaited repairs to the city’s sidewalks began with demolition of the old sidewalks along Bockman Way happening despite near-freezing temperatures during the week.
