 1971 

  • The Stage Coach Retreat retail store next door to city hall,, in Sparta, held its final going out of business sale before closing its doors.
  • The first traffic fatality in Sparta in more than five years occurred on Dec. 16 in front of Bay Service Station, on Bockman Way.
  • A gas blast in the Music Row area of Nashville resulted in tragedy for one Sparta family as they lost a family member in the explosion. The fire marshal stated the exact cause of the explosion would likely never be known.

1981 

  • The Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen prepared to award the contract for the removal of seven houses at Bockman Way and Carter Street for the development of a city park.
  • Sandra L. Harris and Deborah S. Richardson of White County were recognized at a capping and barring ceremony at Tennessee Technological University. The ceremony marked the beginning of the students’ clinical education in the School of Nursing.
  • Tracy Ann Ehle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Ehle, formerly of Sparta, was chosen by the Gulf Coast Debutante Society as a 1981 Gulf Coast Debutante

1991

  • The float made by the Sparta Lions Club took first place among all the floats in the annual Sparta Christmas Parade. The theme for the parade that year was “It’s a Wonderful Life in Sparta and White County.”
  • Meshon Molloy, of Sparta, was among 365 individuals selected to participate in a national dance team performance during the Eagle Aloha Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was the only dancer from Tennessee selected.
  • Mark Frasier, Josh Davis, Brian Lee, and Mark Savage of White County High School were all selected for the All District 7-AAA Football Team. The four Warriors were presented plaques at a banquet, in Murfreesboro.

2001 

  • White County 911 began employing the next phase of wireless E-911. The technology allowed for a wireless 911 call to display the cell phone number and the tower location of the caller to 911 dispatchers.
  • Assistant Commissioner of Veterans Affairs John Furgess presented a special award to former White County Service Officer Lewis Teeple for all his years of dedication and service to the veterans of White County.
  • The 4-H Agricultural Extension Office held a speaking contest for White County students. First place whinners, Haley Jones (4th grade), Emmy Jones (5th grade), Melissa Judd (6th grade), Macey Dawson (7th grade), and Trevor Judd (8th grade), each won a $50 savings bond from 1st Star Bank, a $25 check from the 4-H Extension Office, and a speaking pin.

2011

  • Turney Financial played “Santa Claus” when clients brought unwrapped toys to their annual Christmas Party. The toys were distributed to children who might not otherwise have had presents under their tree that year.
  • The Sparta Christmas Parade filled the town with holiday spirit. Spectators who lined Bockman Way to watch the variety of floats, cars, horses, and bands were able to keep warm with hot cider served by the gals at Woodmen of the World.
  • Tommy Pedigo, of State Farm Insurance in Sparta, provided a Christmas dinner for members of the local Vietnam Veterans organization.
