City leaders discussed leasing a portion of the Sparta Shirt Factory property to William Sorrell for the purpose of opening an Auto Zone Store.
Officer Allen Selby was named Sparta Police Department’s Drug Education and Safety Officer.
1984
White County commissioners voted to purchase 10 acres on McMinnville Highway to construct the new National Guard Armory.
City Recorder Marty Carmichael was awarded a one-year contract, ending a long-standing practice of having the mayor and board elect a recorder after each mayoral election.
White County High School Senior Tim Mason received a trophy for the highest individual scorer out of 200 Future Farmers of America contestants in the land judging competition in Middle Tennessee.
1974
Sparta Lions Club secretary W.E. “Eck” Denton received four awards from Lion International for his work in recruiting new members.
More than 40 underprivileged children were fed a huge meal and given gifts by the Kiwanis Club Christmas party with Santa.
City of Sparta received a citation from keep America Beautiful Inc. at a special awards luncheon in the grand ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel, in New York City. The city was praised with its approach to its solid waste problem.
