  • Cindy McBride represented Link Federal Credit Union as she presented a check to Carolyn Cheek for Gracemoor Inc., an organization that provides a safe environment for those seeking refuge from violent and/or abusive situations.
  • Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Al Seitner was recognized for his outstanding assistance to the FBI in connection with its investigative efforts after Seitner matched a vehicle and suspect to the description for a BOLO (Be On The Lookout) for the person who had robbed Citizens Bank in Sparta, in May.
  • Barbara’s Cedar House, which was located in eastern DeKalb County but had a Sparta address, was completely destroyed by a fire that was believed to have been accidental and started in the restaurant’s kitchen. DeKalb County Fire Chief Donny Green said the fire was controlled with help from White County’s Cassville Volunteer Fire Department.

2001

  • The Expositor launched a new website, Sparta-Expositor.com, so that readers could access news faster and more frequently than the then-published twice a week paper. The website was launched and managed by Jarrod Conner, who had been working for the local newspaper for over five years.
  • Life Care Center of Sparta had a scare when Sparta Fire Department responded to a fire alarm. Sprinklers had turned on and flooded the west part of the facility on Christmas morning. The cause wasn’t a fire but rather a water line that had burst.
  • Members of the White County Middle School Math Club received a check from County Executive Herd Sullivan for their excellence in contributing to the Second Harvest Food Bank. The members of the club said they planned to use the check to purchase more food to donate.

1991

  • Oldham Theater was declared a dangerous building and ordered repaired or demolished within 60 days by the city’s codes enforcement officer. A notice was sent to the owner, Gerald Roberts, of Hendersonville, by Sparta Codes Enforcement Officer Dennis Clark.
  • Five men escaped from White County’s jail on Christmas eve morning after having been drinking homemade “julep” made from saved food scraps and partying in the jail shortly before using the fire escape to leave. Three of the five remained at large three days later.
  • 2nd Lt. Udit Minocha and 2nd Lt. Gregory W. Haney were both assigned to the Sparta National Guard. Minocha, a native of Bombay, India, had previously been in the New York Army National Guard, while Haney was coming from a unit in Clinton, Tennessee.

1981

  • An ensemble, “Promise,” from First Baptist Church visited White County Community Hospital and sang several Christmas carols from a lively arrangement by Buryl Red.
  • The GFWC Woman’s Club held a Christmas party for the exceptional students at West Sparta Elementary and Middle School, treating the students to some refreshments and holiday music.
  • Mrs. Savage’s 4th grade 4-H Club held a public speaking contest. The winners were Mike Raper, Tara Hickey, Esther Dukes, and J.M. Passons. Second place finishers were Chris Judd, Crystal Poston, Ricky Fay, Nickie Phifer, James Culver, Marvin Jared, Joyce Wright, Ann Tindle, Tonya Brown, Mike Roberts, Tonja Melton, and Jenny Vance.

1971

  • A fire that virtually destroyed a home on East Bronson Street was extinguished in time for investigators to find clues that led them to believe that the cause of the fire was arson. At least twenty jugs of gasoline were found in the home, with many of the plastic containers being partially melted allowing gasoline to leak out and seep over the home.
  • Over the Christmas weekend, it was found that a small quantity of cash, all in change, had been taken from a cigarette machine located at Buddy Vinson’s package store on the River Road. No clues were found as to who pied the box open to access the change.
  • An asphalt truck turned over on the Hickory Valley Road, spilling its contents on the side of the road. The accident, which had no reported injuries but kept traffic blocked for several hours, was just one of several odd, but minor accidents that kept road crews and officers busy over the holiday week.
