1973

  • Flow maps released by the Tennessee Department of Highways indicated that Bockman Way was the most travelled road in Sparta with 17,110 cars daily.
  • White County’s quarterly court voted to build a new courthouse on the present site with costs not to exceed $1 million.
  • Springfield’s Mack H. Phelp’s Co. was the low bidder on the airport construction project with $309,708.84.

1983

  • Phase two of the development of the White County Fire Department was completed with the inspection and approval of four new trucks.
  • A White County Improvement Council was in the works to discuss various projects and a course of action for the future.
  • Middle Tennessee Natural Gas was the latest Sparta business to get a facelift with landscaping and the addition of a customer service drive-through window.

1993

  • Angela Broyles won the Universal Regal Pageant held at the Executive Inn in Cookeville.
  • Sparta Warriorette LaNelle Fletcher won a four-year athletic scholarship to Martin Methodist.
  • The WCHS class of 1943 met to celebrate their 50th year since graduating and to honor White County World War II veterans and POWs.

2003

  • Sparta Rotary Club held their first auction to raise money for the needs of the community. Items up for bis included a ride on a Russian jet.
  • A FEMA representative visited Sparta to determine whether or not it would be one of more than 50 counties in Tennessee to be classified as a disaster area following recent storms.
  • Lance Cpl. Tony Hawkins, U.S. Marine Corps, made his way home from serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
