Two injured in early morning crash, transported to Cookeville Regional and Vanderbilt

A two-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 8:23 a.m., Jan. 23,  resulted in the extrication of both drivers.

According to a preliminary report issued by Tennessee Highway Patrol, Martha R. Kirby Norris, 46, was traveling westbound on Smithville Highway (US 70), in a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. Near the address of 5351 Smithville Highway, Norris’ vehicle reportedly crossed the double yellow line and crashed into a 2017 Kia Cadenza, which was headed eastbound and driven by Genevieve C. Hirzel, 39.

According to the report, Norris was not wearing a seatbelt. She was transported by ambulance to Cookeville Regional Medical Center to be treated for her injuries. Sparta-White County Rescue Squad was on the scene and extricated both women from their vehicles.

Hirzel was wearing a seatbelt. She was flown to Vanderbilt Hospital, in Nashville.

“Thanks to all emergency services that responded to the scene,” said Charlie Tollison, Sparta-White County Rescue Squad assistant chief/public information officer. “Thanks to the citizens for your support either by donations or tax dollars for the tools to be able to help our community and its visitors.”
