On Aug. 10, 2022, at approximately 4:45 a.m., Piney Volunteer Fire Department, in Van Buren County, responded with Spencer Fire and Rescue, Fall Creek Falls Volunteer Fire Department, and Cedar Grove Volunteer Fire Department to a structure fire, on Old Dunlap Street, in Spence. Units first on the scene found the structure fully engulfed in flames and the roof collapsing.

Firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames, but the structure was destroyed by the fire.

According to Piney Volunteer Fire Department, no one was home at the time of the fire, and the cause is undetermined.

The heat and humidity hampered firefighting efforts. Two fire personnel were administered IVs by Van Buren County Emergency Medical Service to be rehydrated.

Also responding to the scene were Spencer Police Department and Van Buren County Sheriff's Office.

The fire departments wish to thank everyone who offered to help and brought water to the scene.
