Men and women who have served their country in any branch of the military are invited to participate in an upcoming event called “Veteran Story Day.”

American Legion Post 99, in Sparta, is hosting the event that is open to any veteran, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., June 19, 2021, at Clean Heart Veterans Center, 17 E. Maple St. Combat veterans are encouraged to participate as well as reservists and any veterans who wish to share their stories.

According to Ron Lapierre, commander of American Legion Post 99, he has already confirmed a lieutenant colonel who was a U.S. Air Force pilot who was part of a search and rescue team. Lapierre also said a U.S Marine who took part in a search and destroy mission will tell his story. The Marine walked in with 34 men and walked out with only four.

Christopher Smith, a member of American Legion Post 99, sent out an invitation via his Facebook page.

“So, any veterans out there that have a story that they would like to share at this event, we would love to have you,” Smith said. “Whether you are a combat vet, a reservist, or don’t think you have any stories, we want to hear from you.”

Smith extended the invitation to everyone in the community.

“If you want a glimpse into the world of a vet and the stories they have to share, please come out and see us,” he said. “This is not just cool for everyone to hear the stories of things lost to history, but it is also therapeutic for the veterans to share their funny moments, heartbreak, and tales of heroism.”

For more information or to set up a time for a veteran, contact Lapierre at (931) 256-5023. Smith may also be contacted via his Facebook page.
