Christmas Eve is a day of excitement and expectation for many, but, for volunteer firefighters it is often a day filled with making a decision to leave their families to serve other families. That was no different for the volunteers in White County.
At 1:15 p.m., Dec. 24, 16 members from BonDeCroft Volunteer Fire Department, Eastland Volunteer Fire Department, Cherry Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Doyle Volunteer Fire Department, Hickory Valley Fire Department, Central View Volunteer Fire Department - Walling/Quebeck/Mt. Gilead, and Sparta Fire Department were dispatched by White County E-911/Dispatch Center to a fire at a residence on Verna Qualls Road.
The quick thinking of the family to throw water on the fire and having a fire extinguisher in the residence stopped the fire on the porch from spreading into the home. Members operated on the scene for about an hour to ensure the fire was extinguished and the home was safe for the family to enter. The cause of the fire was accidental in nature.
BonDeCroft Assistant Chief Brandon Reed expressed his appreciation to all of the departments that responded and provided assistance.
Then, at approximately 10:30 p.m., the South Group Automatic Aid group was notified of a camper fire, on Eaton Road. There were 15 members from Doyle and Central View volunteer fire departments who worked for about two hours to ensure the camper that was fully engulfed in flames on arrival was extinguished.
Doyle Fire Chief Jason Sparks said, “The coordinated efforts of our automatic aid partners is always amazing to watch as we work seamlessly to achieve the goal of serving our neighbors.”
The cause of this fire was accidental. Both incidents also had White County Emergency Medical Service and White County Sheriff’s Office assigned who provided necessary support to the incident.
The need continues for volunteers across the county at all of the departments. If anyone is interested in joining and making a difference in the community, reach out to any of the volunteer fire departments.
