On July 2, 2022, Tim French, a U.S Navy veteran who lives in Crossville, along with several other individuals, walked in honor of Capt. Charles A. Mitchell (Dr. Charles Mitchell), a decorated veteran of World War II, who resided in Sparta. Capt. (Dr.) Mitchell passed away June 14, 2022.

French began honoring his fellow veterans several years ago by carrying an American flag on his daily walks.  French then expanded his “walks” into other cities.

“We had a great 3.05-mile walk today (July 2), in Sparta,” French said. “We walked from the Veterans Park downtown to the Highland Cemetery, and then we walked through the park and made stops at the Old Sparta Cemetery and visited a few fallen brothers before stopping in at the Military Museum. We then ended the walk back at the Veterans Park downtown. I want to thank Marnell Cothran, Chris Sapp, Steve, Sherry, and Robert for walking with us today and helping me honor this hero. It was a great walk and a great honor to walk with Army veteran Charles A. Mitchell who we will never forget!”
