State Senator Paul Bailey, of Sparta, recently invited White County High School’s record-breaking running back, Malaki Dowell, to the Tennessee Senate Chamber.

Senator Bailey, a WCHS graduate, extended the offer to the WCHS administration several weeks ago. After being able to arrange a date, Dowell and his mother, along with several coaches and administrators, made their way to the Tennessee Capitol, in Nashville. Senator Bailey was gracious enough to guide Malaki’s tour of the historic Capitol grounds and chambers. At the opening of the afternoon session, Malaki was honored to sit with Senator Bailey at his desk on the Senate floor.

Later in the session, Dowell was honored to be recognized by the Speaker of the Senate in the “well” and introduced by Senator Bailey. Senator Bailey continued by giving the statistics for Dowell’s record-breaking season. Dowell received great applause from the senators and guests in the session. Dowell addressed the senators and thanked Senator Bailey and his fellow legislators for recognizing him. Dowell thanked his mother and his coaches for all their support.

Senator Bailey then introduced WCHS Principal Greg Wilson, who remarked on Dowell’s outstanding season and how great of a young man he is at WCHS. Wilson also recognized the WCHS coaching staff and athletic director Terry Crain. Senators from around the state made positive remarks about Dowell’s accomplishments. Senator Bill Powers welcomed Dowell to District 22, home to Austin Peay University, where Dowell will play for the Governors.
