Warriorettes drop two to start the week

It wasn’t a great start to the week for the White County High School softball team as the Warriorettes dropped two games, one of them to a district opponent, on consecutive nights.

On Monday, the Warriorettes traveled to Cookeville to take on the Cavaliers and fell behind quickly. The Cavaliers scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning while it took the Warriorettes three frames to get a single run on the board. However, Cookeville would respond quickly adding three more to their side of the scoreboard in the bottom of the same inning. When White County pushed another run over the plate in the top of the fourth, the Cavaliers responded by adding four more in their next at bat. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Cookeville would score their tenth run to secure the 10-2 win.

Despite only scoring two runs, the Warriorettes recorded eight hits and drew four walks. They were just unable to get those baserunners all the way around.

On Tuesday, the Warriorettes hosted district rival Livingston Academy. While White County scored first this time, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, they weren’t able to get the win. Livingston tied the score in the top of the second and then took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning. The Warriorettes closed the gap to one when they were able to get a single run in the bottom of the third inning. But that’s where the scoring would stop for White County. Livingston, however, would score three more in the fourth inning and the game ended with the 6-2 score.

White County again had plenty of hitting power, recording ten hits – one more than Livingston had. Kylie Norvell led White County going 4-for-4 at the plate including a double and a homerun. Anna McCulley and Callie Phillips each had two hits while Abigail Schalk and Hannah Poteet had one a piece.

This time it was the Warriorette defense that was a problem, committing six errors on the night. The errors resulted in four unearned runs for the Wildcats.
